Flash Settings


With thousands of cameras and lenses at your disposal, nothing beats a rock-solid flash and we've got plenty! Simply click the Flash tab along the top of the UI to access this section.

Select Your Flash

  • Select Flash - Retrographer comes with six fantastic flashes for you to apply to your images: Select the Standard Flash when you what to create a classic brightening flash effect. Select the Enhanced Flash to create bright and bold color effects. Select our Pro Flash to achieve a perfect balanced blend of brightening and colorizing. Also, these three flashes come in Standard and Flood so you can decide if you want a standard radial flash light fill or if you want to fill the entire image with your flash. And, you can change the flash at any time to view all possible flash styles.

  • Flash Preset Picker - The first thing you may want to do is choose from our default preset flash effects you'd like to start working with. To do so, simply click the desired flash preset effect you'd like to use from the filmstrip picker by clicking on it. Click the arrows to the left and right of the picker to browse through the flash effects or to remove the flash effect, just click the grey box icon in the far left of the picker.

Adjust the Flash

Generally a flash consists of a large area of light that floods the image and sometimes a more obvious flash hotspot in the center of the light field. Since camera flashes come in all shapes, sizes and colors, we've given you the ability to adjust ever aspect of the flash on your image.

  • Flash Intensity - Increase or fade the overall flash effect by moving the slider control or by simply entering a number in the text entry field to the right.

  • Hotspot Intensity - Increase or fade the flash hotspot effect by moving the slider control or by simply entering a number in the text entry field to the right.

  • Hotspot Size - Using the slider control, you may enlarge or reduce the size of the flash hotspot within the flash or simply enter a number in the text entry field to the right.

  • Hotspot Edge - Use the Hotspot Edge slider to soften or sharpen the transition from the edge of the flash hotspot within the flash.

  • Flash Offset - To modify the position of the flash on your image, click and drag the + icon on the shaded sphere. For more precise control, you may also adjust the numbers in the X and Y coordinate boxes respectively.

  • Flash Color - Simply click the color swatch icon to launch the color picker to select the flash color you'd like to apply to your image. Use the Flash Color slider to desaturate the flash color.

  • Hotspot Color - Simply click the color swatch icon to launch the color picker to select the flash hotspot color you'd like to apply to your image. Use the Hotspot Color slider to desaturate the flash hotspot color.

User Created Flashes - The User Created Flashes dialog allows you to save or apply previously saved flash settings to the image you're working with, and we've created a nice variety of great flashes to get you started. Once you've created a flash setting you like, click the Save button, name the setting and click OK to save this setting. To recall and apply a setting, simply click on the setting name in the dialog box. To delete a setting, simply click its name in the dialog box and click the Delete button.

Working with the Preview Window


  • Preview Options - Above the Preview window at right, you'll notice some viewing options. By default the Composite option is selected to show you what all combined tabbed section effects look like applied to the image. At any time you can click the Original option to toggle between the unaffected image and a preview of the filtered image with all effects applied or click the Flash option to view just the Flash applied to the image.

  • Magnifying the Preview - Below the Preview window, you'll see the magnification controls. By clicking the appropriate icon (- or +), you can increase or decrease the magnification of the Preview window. The current level of magnification is shown between the magnification icons.

  • Moving the Preview - When you have increased magnification and wish to view the texture effect on the rest of the image not visible in the Preview window, simply move your mouse into the Preview window and click and drag your image around to reveal the texture effected image.

Applying the Flash effect - Once you're satisfied with your flash settings, you can continue to define more settings in other tabbed sections, or simply click the OK button below the Preview window to apply the filter with the current settings. Clicking Cancel closes the plug-in without applying the effect.
